How would hand sanitizer help against flu/virus?

Hand sanitizers kill bacteria, but flu and viruses are caused by viruses which the hand sanitizer wont kill, so how does hand sanitizer help prevent getting the flu if it wont kill or get rid of it?
Germs are bacterias, viruses are not as they arent cells, it kills bacteria by destroying its cell membrane.

the alcohol in it helps kill the germs on your hands so that you don’t transfer them to your mouth
